In 2007, 20 year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were kicked, stomped on and left unconscious – for nothing more than looking different. Sophie later died from her injuries.
In tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua has commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ – a short film by award-winning French director, Fursy Teyssier. It's a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead.
This hits so close to home. When I was school we had a group of student who set after our group. Our group was a group made up of all sorts, anyone was welcomed. If you didn't fit in anywhere else you could find a safe place with us. We had goths, punks, foreign exchange students, gays, weirdos, whatever and we were constantly assaulted by a group of students. Did it turn violent a few times? Yes, at one point it became so dangerous for us to walk home from school. A few us had been jumped while trying to get home. It wasn't safe to be alone. I've been followed, shouted out, and physically attacked because of the way I look. It still happens & It's always such a shock to me. I live in a large major city of the world. It's the 21st century.
This is just heartbreaking that things like this still take place. Kids can be such animals sometimes.
